Umm, no. Jimmy Page and Hendrix have both alluded to the fact that without Robert Johnson, they would never have existed. His albums were released before the 50’s and 60’s. To think that most of these guitarists (and by effect the people influenced those artists as well) didn’t have their hands on Robert Johnson or Mississippi John Hurt albums which they learned from is preposterous. Please stop typing.
Buckethead would be Top 5 easy if he were more mainstream. The man can play anything and make it his own. If you’re interested, I’d give “Nottingham Lace”, “Final Wars”, “Big Sur Moon”, “Population Override”, and “Soothsayer” a try just to get an idea of what I’m talking about. The sky is the limit from there.
As a long time player conveying the skill, craft and passion of this art, which is as much as a science, players of ANY and every instrument can unanimously agree that there are no “best” players. Some have great moments that were captured and regurgitated in the media time and a get which put them in a permanent vista. This is greatness? Hardly. I’ve seen A LOT of players, some included in the article and the majority chanted by the readers on this board screw things up beyond repair–some during the opening of their first song of the performance. OUCH that hurts…but it happens. Some completely lost track with what they were doing during a show casing of their solo work…oops. Yep it happens, like sometimes happens to singers who forget their lines–it doesn’t matter that they have written the song they were performing. Yea, we hear about this stuff every now and then, however at the end of the day, this doesn’t matter. The truth is, people hear only what they want to hear and will by their very disposition, ignore the negatives and embrace the positives of their work–alas this is why this supportive listeners are called FANS.
This list was clearly written by someone who doesn’t have a clue what “great” means. Tom Morello? John Frusciante? John Mayer? If this were titled “over-rated guitar players who should stop playing and get back to washing my car”, then they’d fit.
Speaking of Cambridge in the late sixties, of course Dave Gilmour was another who came out of that scene, but he and Nick were far from alone. For example, there was (and is) Fred Frith. I’ve never warmed to his music but it’s certainly different and he and his group have changed people’s ideas of what music is. You deserve it to yourself to check him out before you dismiss him. Then there’s Derek Bailey, who ploughs a parallel furrow, but for sure knows how to play a guitar. Personally, in that vein, I find Billy Jenkins much more fun – fans of Tom Morelli’s style should be checking all these guys out.
If you plan to be the more lead-orientated guitarist, good for you. You’ll get more chicks and a higher place in the band pecking order. You shouldn’t however, neglect your chordal playing. A song can exist without lead lines, but not without rhythm. Don’t be fooled, every one of your guitar heroes is invariably a demon on rhythm guitar too. It’s a prerequisite: you have to understand the chords, rhythm, and harmony of a song before you can play any meaningful melody on top of it.
What worries Gruhn is not simply that profits are down. That happens in business. He’s concerned by the “why” behind the sales decline. Occasionally, acoustic-electric and electric guitars will have built-in effects, such as a preamp or equalizer.
Many compressor pedals are often also marketed as “sustainer pedals”. As a note is sustained, it loses energy and volume due to diminishing vibration in the string. The compressor pedal boosts its electrical signal to the specified dynamic range, slightly prolonging the duration of the note. This, combined with heavy distortion and the close proximity of the guitar and the speaker cabinet, can lead to infinite sustain at higher volumes.

From the late 1940s onward, the Gibson Guitar Corp. began including vibrato circuits in combo amplifiers. Fender began manufacturing the tremolo amps Tremolux in 1955 and Vibrolux in 1956.

His guitar riffs are forever etched into Rock and Roll’s hall of fame. How influential was he? Step into a guitar store, and you’ll see. 33 Dimebag Darrell Darrell Lance Abbott, also known as Diamond Darrell and Dimebag Darrell, was an American guitarist and songwriter best known as a founding member of two bands, Pantera and Damageplan, alongside his brother, Vinnie Paul. Abbott died in 2004 after he was shot by a mentally unstable fan.
This, in turn, led to the first stompbox-pedal-and-fuzz circuit used for recording purposes, designed by Orville “Red” Rhodes in 1961. It was never produced commercially and was built primarily to recreate Martin’s sound for Nokie Edwards (of The Ventures fame) and Billy Strange (who used it for Ann-Margaret’s 1961 hit “I Just Don’t Understand”).
Vibrato: Vibrato effects produce slight, rapid variations in pitch, mimicking the fractional semitone variations produced naturally by opera singers and violinists when they are prolonging a single note. Vibrato effects often allow the performer to control the rate of the variation as well as the difference in pitch (e.g. “depth”). A vibrato with an extreme “depth” setting (e.g., half a semitone or more) will produce a dramatic, ululating sound. In transistorized effects, vibrato is produced by mixing an instrument’s audio signal with a carrier wave in such a way that generates frequency variations in the sound wave. Guitarists often use the terms “vibrato” and “tremolo” misleadingly. A so-called “vibrato unit” in a guitar amplifier actually produces tremolo, while a “tremolo arm” or “whammy bar” on a guitar produces vibrato.
The octave effect does exactly what its name says. It takes the raw signal from your guitar and adds one or more of its copies which are pitch shifted for an octave up, or down. Some models come with both upper and lower octave available, while others allow you to use as many as three octaves. One of the best examples of this type of pedal is the Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork.
A difficult effect to explain, the compressor’s value is in it subtle and careful use. A compressor acts like bumpers on your signal’s amplitude, preventing the volume from spiking too loud while also preventing the volume from decaying too quickly. Because of this, it increases sustain – which is great for solos – while evening out playing dynamics. Country and funk players use compression heavily to achieve spanky and crisp punctuation within their playing. Compressors will add noise to the signal, so many higher end boxes will have a noise gate feature. Other than making cleans sparkle, you can also front-load your distortion or overdrive to get great clear sustain.
After that, I don’t really care. But any person with an actual brain for music knows that Slash, Jimi and Stevie need to be at the top of the list. Come on. Syn is the best of the modern guitar players. That’s why he should be 4th, behind the greats.
Phaser: A phaser or “phase shifter” creates a slight rippling effect—amplifying some aspects of the tone while diminishing others—by splitting an audio signal in two and altering the phase of one portion. Three well-known examples of phaser are the two handed tapping part on the Van Halen instrumental “Eruption” and the keyboard parts on Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” and Paul Simon’s “Slip Slidin’ Away”.
