My teaching approach: I think that the best way to become good at something is to understand the theory underlying it. Besides teaching technique, we will also study music theory. I will not just be using guitar to explain it either; we will use keyboard, wind instruments, and other stringed instruments as well to develop a deeper understanding of what goes on when you play. My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher’s studio or the student’s home Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas: I live and teach in Lafayette and the surrounding cities. s player but Luke has been able to stretch my playing out side of my rock/blues box and introduce some very cool techniques and ideas to add real interest and flavor to my playing. It’s been a pure pleasure!”
The next step is to figure out what gauge, or thickness of string is best suited to your playing ability and style. Thinner gauges are easier to fret and bend, and may be better suited for beginners, until callouses build up on the fingertips. Heavier strings tend to produce greater volume and fuller tone. Nylon strings are typically categorized as light, medium or heavy tension. Steel strings for both electric and acoustic guitars are categorized by the gauge, or thickness of the lightest string, the high E string, measured in thousandths of an inch, with .09 being a common size for an electric set. A set of electric strings may be labeled .09-.042 – this is the gauge of the lightest and heaviest string in the set. Acoustic sets are a little thicker, so a typical medium-gauge set might be .012-.054.
The discoveries are small in Slight Freedom — the slow percussive fade of the title track into a barely-there drone, the melody of Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids” given a Jim Hall-like tentativeness, the inverted and invented self-accompaniment of “Mainz” and Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life” paired down to lonely tremolo and feedback. One of 2016’s most unassuming revelations in guitar music.
We offer biannual recitals for a low-pressure, non-mandatory opportunity to play in front of an audience and meet other like-minded music students. Recitals provide a terrific opportunity to work toward a goal and hone one’s performance skills. Our recitals feature students of all ages and many instruments.
Our philosophy is simple. We make learning music fun, and are committed to the integrity of a quality music education. In addition to a foundational education, students are given ample opportunity to make music with others. The confidence gained by learning music parlays with other areas, giving students the self-assurance to take on new challenges.

You would be best avoiding the ridiculous “1,000,000 Chord Shapes” books, they contain many useless chords that are just there to make the numbers up, impractical and sound awful and never used by real guitar players. I know because I have friends who have written some of those books and I know they get pressure from publishers for numbers, not quality. Same with many of the online chord dictionary things, even though the chords are theoretically correct, they just don’t sound good.
Modern pickups are tailored to the sound desired. A commonly applied approximation used in selection of a pickup is that less wire (lower electrical impedance) gives brighter sound, more wire gives a “fat” tone. Other options include specialized switching that produces coil-splitting, in/out of phase and other effects. Guitar circuits are either active, needing a battery to power their circuit, or, as in most cases, equipped with a passive circuit.
In acoustic guitars, string vibration is transmitted through the bridge and saddle to the body via sound board. The sound board is typically made of tone woods such as spruce or cedar. Timbers for tone woods are chosen for both strength and ability to transfer mechanical energy from the strings to the air within the guitar body. Sound is further shaped by the characteristics of the guitar body’s resonant cavity. In expensive instruments, the entire body is made of wood. In inexpensive instruments, the back may be made of plastic.
Jim Campilongo on justinguitar.com! Jim Campilongo (www.jimcampilongo.com) “Justin is an instructor with that rare combination that encompasses great playing in conjunction with a thoughtful, likable personality. Justin’s instruction is extremely intelligent because he’s smart enough to know the ‘basics’ don’t have to be served ‘raw’ – Justin keenly serves the information covered in chocolate. Justin’s site is like a free pass in a candy store!”
But there were already hints of the change to come, of the evolutions in music technology that would eventually compete with the guitar. In 1979, Tascam’s Portastudio 144 arrived on the market, allowing anybody with a microphone and a patch cord to record with multiple tracks. (Bruce Springsteen used a Portastudio for 1982’s “Nebraska.”) In 1981, Oberheim introduced the DMX drum machine, revolutionizing hip-hop.
Many guitarists have a tendency to focus most of their practice time and energy on left-hand fretting technique. Although the left hand is very important, mastering different rhythms and guitar strum patterns with your right hand adds a whole new dimension to your guitar playing. Understanding Guitar Strum Patterns Start by playing a simple chord progression. Ideally, you should be able to play through the chords without looking at the fingers on your left hand. Starting with a simple prog
As a sideman, he played and recorded many times in Boston, Lansing as well as South Korea. When MSU Spartan Jazz Trombone Group was a winner of ITA, Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition in 2014 he was the rhythm section.
The acoustic bass guitar is a bass instrument with a hollow wooden body similar to, though usually somewhat larger than, that of a 6-string acoustic guitar. Like the traditional electric bass guitar and the double bass, the acoustic bass guitar commonly has four strings, which are normally tuned E-A-D-G, an octave below the lowest four strings of the 6-string guitar, which is the same tuning pitch as an electric bass guitar. It can, more rarely, be found with 5 or 6 strings, which provides a wider range of notes to be played with less movement up and down the neck.
I will bring my own instruments and an amplifier. Students are expected to provide their own instrument, amplifier (for electric), a music stand, and a place where we can study without distractions and interruptions.

Michael is a talented person with a friendly personality and great work ethic! He made sure to tailor his lesson to my needs and get me motivated about what is to come next. He will be a great teacher for students of all ages.
As a teacher I require all students to set time aside to practice. For without it, it is only wasting your time, your money and my time. I don’t expect a total dedication to it but I do want to see some effort put into it. A little practice can go a long way and the more you do it, the faster you will progress and the more you will enjoy it. We will first start off with what you want out of music and the level you are at and go from there. Student can bring their own music either thru tabs, music sheet or just by ear but one thing I do expect is a student to learn how to read music notation. We will go thru the regular warm up exercises, material practiced during the week and any new music for the following week. Correct techniques in how to hold your instrument or voice procedures will be addressed. Music theory will also be part of the lesson as well as ear training. At the end of either 3 to 6 months you will have learned the basics of music and will be playing songs for you or someone else to enjoy. I will make it a total relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere but some dedication has to put on the students’ part.
I have been playing the Guitar since I was in junior high and love being able to play. I enjoy passing on the knowledge I have to my students so they can write and/or perform their own songs, or just to play for their own enjoyment. I teach acoustic guitar, strumming styles, good timing, and fairly advanced finger picking techniques. My students range form 7 years on up.
Luke is the best guitar instructor I’ve ever had. He caters to my learning style very well, which is to learn just the stuff that “works” in a real life setting. His insight has made my sound 10x better and has given me a great framework for improvement (Even my band mates have noticed a difference with my playing). He also has a keen sense of where my own guitar playing issues stem from and knows what needs to be done to address them. For example, he could tell that I was gripping the strings too hard with my fingers and it would make the sound harsh.
I believe that music is rooted in all human beings and cultures in a reach and vast variety of forms. Music unifies and engages thinking and feeling in a direct and immediate way. Music influences individuals simultaneously on different levels of consciousness and form an important device for learning, recreation, arranging of conscious and unconscious impressions and at the same time for characterizing and conveying ideas and thoughts. This as a point of departure characterizes my teaching philosophy, which strives to create a climate in which my students can experience continuous musical, intellectual, and emotional growth.
For sake of focus, these 10 unranked records (and a few honorable mentions) were all primarily made by one person with the guitar as the primary instrument. That’s why you don’t see the stellar records made by Chris Forsyth, Mary Halvorson, William Tyler or Cian Nugent this year, as they were backed by bands that understand their singular approaches to the instrument. Instead, these records celebrate new possibilities in the solo exploration of six and 12 strings.
This is a perfect chance for you or your child who can’t stop singing around the house or has dreams of shredding on the guitar or twinkling on the ivories to learn the fundamentals of music, start something new that keeps them or you focused, and have fun while doing it!
The original purpose of the resonator was to produce a very loud sound; this purpose has been largely superseded by electrical amplification, but the resonator guitar is still played because of its distinctive tone. Resonator guitars may have either one or three resonator cones. The method of transmitting sound resonance to the cone is either a “biscuit” bridge, made of a small piece of hardwood at the vertex of the cone (Nationals), or a “spider” bridge, made of metal and mounted around the rim of the (inverted) cone (Dobros). Three-cone resonators always use a specialized metal bridge. The type of resonator guitar with a neck with a square cross-section—called “square neck” or “Hawaiian”—is usually played face up, on the lap of the seated player, and often with a metal or glass slide. The round neck resonator guitars are normally played in the same fashion as other guitars, although slides are also often used, especially in blues.
Juszkiewicz, 64, is known for being temperamental, ultracompetitive and difficult to work for. A former Gibson staffer recalls a company retreat in Las Vegas punctuated by a trip to a shooting range, where executives shot up a Fender Stratocaster. In recent years, Juszkiewicz has made two major pushes, both seemingly aimed at expanding a company when a product itself — the guitar — has shown a limited ability to grow its market.

Fretboards are most commonly made of rosewood, ebony, maple, and sometimes manufactured using composite materials such as HPL or resin. See the section “Neck” below for the importance of the length of the fretboard in connection to other dimensions of the guitar. The fingerboard plays an essential role in the treble tone for acoustic guitars. The quality of vibration of the fingerboard is the principal characteristic for generating the best treble tone. For that reason, ebony wood is better, but because of high use, ebony has become rare and extremely expensive. Most guitar manufacturers have adopted rosewood instead of ebony.
