A lot of guitar players kink their wrists either too far forward or too far back behind the guitar. If your wrist is too far forward, it can really hurt your hand. Of course, there are a few ways to narrow down the string options. For starters, since guitars come in different scales, you need a set that’s the right length for your instrument. You also need to match the type of guitar: electric strings for an electric guitar, acoustic strings for acoustic. If you play an acoustic-electric, you’ll usually be looking for acoustic strings since those instruments use non-magnetic pickups. For classical and Latin guitar types directly descended from ancient gut-stringed instruments, the right strings are generally going to be nylon.

For four strings, the 5th fret on one string is the same open-note as the next string; for example, a 5th-fret note on the sixth string is the same note as the open fifth string. However, between the second and third strings, an irregularity occurs: The 4th-fret note on the third string is equivalent to the open second string.

“Music is music,” he says. “These guys are all musical heroes, whatever cool instrument they play. And today, they’re gravitating toward programming beats on an Ableton. I don’t think that’s any less creative as playing bass. I’m open to the evolution as it unfolds. Musical genius is musical genius. It just takes different forms.”

Whether in his own bands Dysrhythmia and Vaura or playing in Gorguts and Sabbath Assembly, Kevin Hufnagel is one of modern metal’s most technically accomplished and song-driven guitarists. The New York-based musician is expansive in his definition of extreme music, and while Backwards Through The Maze explores his softer, ambient side, the double EP is a deeper exploration of Hufnagel’s prowess. There is an unsettled quality to his guitar manipulations that sound like Frippertronics sunk into the abyss and illuminated by an alien glow.
Now we’re going to learn the C major chord, which is a great chord to see if you are coming down on the tips of your fingers or not. Tweaking your fretting hand posture just a little makes a big difference in the sound of the chord.

^ “We know from literary sources that the five course guitar was immensely popular in Spain in the early seventeenth century and was also widely played in France and Italy…Yet almost all the surviving guitars were built in Italy…This apparent disparity between the documentary and instrumental evidence can be explained by the fact that, in general, only the more expensively made guitars have been kept as collectors’ pieces. During the early seventeenth century the guitar was an instrument of the people of Spain, but was widely played by the Italian aristocracy.” Tom and Mary Anne Evans. Guitars: From the Renaissance to Rock. Paddington Press Ltd, 1977, p. 24.

For the second note of the A minor 7 chord, place your second finger on the second fret of the D string. This is the second of the two notes you need to fret to play this chord. Make sure you’re on the tip of your finger and right behind the fret. Now that you have both notes in place, strum the top five strings, remembering to leave the low E string out.
