I am a classically trained musician who has studied at CSUF and performs Classical, Jazz, Popular, Musical theater, and Opera. I have performed in venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Segerstrom hall, Walt Disney concert hall and many more with artists like Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, John Williams, the LA philharmonic orchestra, and the Pacific Symphony, among others.
In the next lesson, we’ll learn two more chords for you to add to your chord library. I’ll also give you some tips on how to switch chords smoothly since that can be something many beginners have trouble with. If you have any questions about making chords or how to make them sound good, you can feel free to contact us for help.
Another class of alternative tunings are called drop tunings, because the tuning drops down the lowest string. Dropping down the lowest string a whole tone results in the “drop-D” (or “dropped D”) tuning. Its open-string notes DADGBE (from low to high) allow for a deep bass D note, which can be used in keys such as D major, d minor and G major. It simplifies the playing of simple fifths (powerchords). Many contemporary rock bands re-tune all strings down, making, for example, Drop-C or Drop-B tunings.

Of course, there are a few ways to narrow down the string options. For starters, since guitars come in different scales, you need a set that’s the right length for your instrument. You also need to match the type of guitar: electric strings for an electric guitar, acoustic strings for acoustic. If you play an acoustic-electric, you’ll usually be looking for acoustic strings since those instruments use non-magnetic pickups. For classical and Latin guitar types directly descended from ancient gut-stringed instruments, the right strings are generally going to be nylon.

These are covered in The Intermediate Course and will be added when the course is fully live… but I also have a lesson on them that I will pull down once the intermediate ones are live, cos I think I did the lesson better on that and it’s essentially the same!
I will bring my own instruments and an amplifier. Students are expected to provide their own instrument, amplifier (for electric), a music stand, and a place where we can study without distractions and interruptions.
A lot of guitar players kink their wrists either too far forward or too far back behind the guitar. If your wrist is too far forward, it can really hurt your hand. If your wrist is too far back, you won’t be able to reach around to make your chords. Keep your wrist fairly straight instead, like I do in the video.
The Spanish vihuela, called in Italian the “viola da mano”, a guitar-like instrument of the 15th and 16th centuries, is widely considered to have been the single most important influence in the development of the baroque guitar. It had six courses (usually), lute-like tuning in fourths and a guitar-like body, although early representations reveal an instrument with a sharply cut waist. It was also larger than the contemporary four-course guitars. By the 16th century, the vihuela’s construction had more in common with the modern guitar, with its curved one-piece ribs, than with the viols, and more like a larger version of the contemporary four-course guitars. The vihuela enjoyed only a relatively short period of popularity in Spain and Italy during an era dominated elsewhere in Europe by the lute; the last surviving published music for the instrument appeared in 1576.
Ready to get started with learning blues chord progressions? Here’s an intro by Austin, TX guitar teacher Samuel B… In order to properly respect and understand both the theory and structure of ANY kind of American music, it’s essential to be able to play the blues. Although the form is said (by some scholars) to have originated in Africa within the story-telling traditions of village griots (historians/poets/musicians who would play a five-stringed instrument known as the halam, w
“I took voice and piano lessons in Steven B’s Coronado Music Studio and also online via Skype. Both experiences were great, and it was really convenient to do the lessons on Skype. Steven B is an excellent teacher, and he is very patient. I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument or sing!” – Kat , 5 Stars!
I’ve been taking lessons with remy for the past 2 months and my ability has massively increased. Not only is remy a great guitar player but his patience makes him an awesome teacher. His understanding of music is fantastic and he is very good at breaking songs apart to make it easy for the student to learn. As well as teaching he also uses his own time to find songs for me to practice that would improve my
Michael is a great instructor especially for young guitar players who are just learning to play. Michael was able to get Ethan excited about learning about music and practicing the guitar. Great followup, feedback, and professional beyond his years. Highly recommend!
Other factors involved in the manufacturing process will also have an effect on acoustic guitar strings. The Newtone Master Class Double Wound strings are an example of a string with a special manufacturing process involved, which in this case reduces string surface noise.
Silk and Steel (aka “compound strings”) – which have greater flexibility and lower string tension, resulting in gentler, mellower sound. They are commonly referred to as a hybrid between traditional metal strings, and the nylon strings of a classical guitar.
Nylon – which is the material that eventually replaced gut because it was cheaper, and easier to mass manufacture. Common types of nylon include: rectified nylon, black nylon, and composite. Although clear nylon is the most popular by far because of its brightness and clarity.
Our philosophy is simple. We make learning music fun, and are committed to the integrity of a quality music education. In addition to a foundational education, students are given ample opportunity to make music with others. The confidence gained by learning music parlays with other areas, giving students the self-assurance to take on new challenges.
There are a whole series in the Jazz Section that explains how and why you can alter chords and you should make sure you understand all that before you spend time learning the chords, or you will never know how to use them and it will be a complete waste of time!
When I teach at a student’s home, I bring my Guitar with me, if they’re studying this instrument. It is helpful for a student to have a piano or keyboard for me to teach voice, but I do have a keyboard I can bring if none is available. Having a computer close by is very helpful, to get the most out of the lesson as is possible.
A variety of tunings may be used. The most common tuning, known as “Standard Tuning”, has the strings tuned from a low E, to a high E, traversing a two octave range—EADGBE. When all strings are played open the resulting chord is an Em7/add11.
Our instructors show you every section of the song, note by note, and even teach you how to get the proper tone for a song. At the end of each tutorial there’s a play-along video with a full backing band!
My teaching style is intuitive and fun. I am light on theory with and mostly focus on techniques with students to get you playing as quickly as possible. My lessons cater to your needs and at your own pace.
The bass guitar (also called an “electric bass”, or simply a “bass”) is similar in appearance and construction to an electric guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and four to six strings. The four-string bass, by far the most common, is usually tuned the same as the double bass, which corresponds to pitches one octave lower than the four lowest pitched strings of a guitar (E, A, D, and G). (The bass guitar is a transposing instrument, as it is notated in bass clef an octave higher than it sounds (as is the double bass) to avoid excessive ledger lines.[jargon]) Like the electric guitar, the bass guitar has pickups and it is plugged into an amplifier and speaker for live performances.

Can’t believe I missed a month update here on the site – just got my head into the new site update so much that I guess it’s hard to motivate myself here on this ‘old’ one – even thought it’s what y’all see! The new site is cooking along great, there will be loads of new lessons and updated structures and I’m so excited to release it – probably in stages while I keep this one live for a bit.
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.
As they play, the teenagers dance, laugh and work to get the songs right. Their parents are also happy. Arezou Lemos, Mena’s mother, sees a daughter who is confident and has two sets of friends — the kids at School of Rock and her peers at Newton South High School.
Thinking about taking guitar lessons? It’s one of the most popular instruments for beginners! While it’s pretty easy to pick up the guitar and start plucking, if you really want to master the chords and songs you hear from your favorite artists, working with an experienced guitar teacher is important. Here, Brooklyn guitar teacher Amit P. discusses six of the most common questions new guitar players have before starting lessons… 1. “Am I too young or too old to start learn

The guitar is the most popular instrument in the world. Steven B is one of the best instructors out there. He teaches in students’ homes across the United States as easily as in the Coronado Music Studio. He combines methods of teaching sight reading, playing by ear, and improvisation. He teaches many styles of music, pop, rock as well as ethnic music genres. Teaching all the fundamentals of technique in guitar for correct hand positions, fingering, and position. Strumming, finger picking, hybrid picking, and the C-A-G-E-D formula is taught, depending upon the interest of the student. Steven B may be the only teacher out there who uses his recording studio in producing recordings to assist his guitar students in the learning process. Prepare to learn and have a lot of fun!
“I was a bit anxious at first given my old age, but soon realized there were other students at Paper Moon that were of my same age, or older, and everybody in between me and the teenagers. The music studio is first class, comfortable, and conducive to learning. Most rewarding activity I’ve undertaken in years.”
For four strings, the 5th fret on one string is the same open-note as the next string; for example, a 5th-fret note on the sixth string is the same note as the open fifth string. However, between the second and third strings, an irregularity occurs: The 4th-fret note on the third string is equivalent to the open second string.
The standard guitar has six strings, but four-, seven-, eight-, nine-, ten-, eleven-, twelve-, thirteen- and eighteen-string guitars are also available. Classical and flamenco guitars historically used gut strings, but these have been superseded by polymer materials, such as nylon and fluorocarbon. Modern guitar strings are constructed from metal, polymers, or animal or plant product materials. Instruments utilizing “steel” strings may have strings made from alloys incorporating steel, nickel or phosphor bronze. Bass strings for both instruments are wound rather than monofilament.
I believe in creating a positive and exciting work environment where we can have you develop at your own pace in a productive way. A great teacher is one that customizes their lesson to fit the student’s individual needs while making the lesson educational and fun!

Inlays are visual elements set into the exterior surface of a guitar, both for decoration and artistic purposes and, in the case of the markings on the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 12th fret (and in higher octaves), to provide guidance to the performer about the location of frets on the instrument. The typical locations for inlay are on the fretboard, headstock, and on acoustic guitars around the soundhole, known as the rosette. Inlays range from simple plastic dots on the fretboard to intricate works of art covering the entire exterior surface of a guitar (front and back). Some guitar players have used LEDs in the fretboard to produce unique lighting effects onstage. Fretboard inlays are most commonly shaped like dots, diamond shapes, parallelograms, or large blocks in between the frets.
